Description
10% PVP-I Solution.
Each 100 mL of Povidone Iodine solution contains 10 g of Povidone Iodine, equivalent to 1 g available Iodine.
Indications:
- Disinfection of skin pre-operatively.
- Antiseptic treatment of wounds, (e.g. pressure sores, leg ulcers) and burns.
A 10% PVP-I (Povidone-Iodine) solution is a common topical antiseptic used for various applications, including skin preparation before surgery, cleaning minor cuts and wounds, and preventing infections. It’s a broad-spectrum antiseptic effective against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
Key Uses and Benefits:
Antiseptic:
PVP-I solutions, like B. Braun’s 10% PVP-I solution and BETADINE’s Antiseptic Solution PVP-I 10%, are effective at killing germs and preventing infections in minor cuts, wounds, abrasions, and burns.
Skin Preparation:
It’s a primary hospital antiseptic for preparing the skin before surgery, ensuring a sterile field.
Wound Care:
PVP-I solutions can be used to clean and disinfect wounds, promoting healing and preventing infection.
Broad Spectrum:
The solution’s broad-spectrum activity makes it effective against a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and some viruses.
Infection Control:
PVP-I can be used in various settings to help control and prevent infections.
Versatile:
PVP-I solutions can be used in hospitals, clinics, and even at home for cleaning minor wounds, cuts, and abrasions.
Important Considerations:
External Use Only: PVP-I solutions are for topical use only and should not be ingested.
Allergies: Individuals with allergies or sensitivities to iodine should avoid using PVP-I solutions.
Eye Contact: Avoid getting the solution in the eyes.
Professional Use: Some PVP-I solutions are for professional use only, like those used in hospital settings.
Consult a Doctor: For deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, or if infection develops, consult a doctor before using PVP-I.
Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is commonly used in human healthcare for its broad-spectrum antiseptic properties. The concentration used varies depending on the application—ranging from 0.1% to 10%, with 10% being the stock solution (which contains about 1% available iodine).
Here’s a breakdown of human-use concentrations and their common applications:
🔶 Topical Use (Skin & Wound Antiseptic)
Concentration: 5–10% PVP-I solution
Use: Pre-operative skin preparation, minor wound cleaning, cuts, abrasions, ulcers
Application: Applied directly; can be diluted to 1–3% for sensitive areas or repeated use
🔶 Mouth and Throat (Oral Antiseptic / Gargle)
Concentration: 0.5–1% PVP-I
Use: Mouthwash, gargle, or oral rinse for sore throat, gingivitis, or after dental procedures
Dosage: Dilute 1:2 to 1:4 from 10% stock; use 10–15 mL per rinse, gargle for 30 seconds
Note: Should not be swallowed
🔶 Eye Drops or Ophthalmic Prep
Concentration: 0.6%–5% PVP-I
Use: Pre-operative antiseptic, or occasionally for conjunctivitis (under medical supervision)
Note: Special ophthalmic formulations only; never use standard 10% solution in eyes
🔶 Vaginal Antiseptic (Douches or Creams)
Concentration: 1–10% PVP-I
Use: Treatment of vaginitis or as a pre-surgical antiseptic
Form: Suppositories, gels, or douches—ready-made at appropriate concentration
🔶 Hand Scrub / Surgical Scrub
Concentration: 7.5–10% PVP-I scrub
Use: Used by healthcare professionals before procedures
Application: Apply to wet hands, scrub for ~2–5 minutes, then rinse
⚠️ Cautions & Contraindications
Avoid prolonged use on large wounds (iodine absorption risk)
Contraindicated in individuals with iodine allergy, thyroid disorders, or those on radioactive iodine therapy
Use with caution in pregnancy or lactation
Long-term use can alter thyroid function, especially in infants

Agriculture
Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is a widely used antiseptic due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. In agriculture and aquaculture, it’s applied in various ways to prevent or control infections. Here’s a breakdown of its uses and typical dosages in these sectors:
1. Agriculture Uses
A. Animal Husbandry
– Disinfection of equipment and surfaces:
– Usage: Cleaning animal housing, feeding tools, milking machines.
– Dosage: 0.5%–1% PVP-I solution.
– Teat dipping in dairy farming:
– Usage: Prevent mastitis in cows.
– Dosage: 0.5%–1% solution used pre- and post-milking.
B. Wound Care in Livestock
– Topical antiseptic for cuts, wounds, infections, and surgical sites.
– Dosage: Apply undiluted 10% PVP-I solution or diluted (1:2 to 1:10) for less irritation.
C. Seed Treatment & Plant Pathogen Control (less common)
– Sometimes used for:
– Seed disinfection to prevent fungal contamination.
– Dosage: Typically a 0.5%–1% solution soak for seeds (e.g., in research settings, ~15–30 minutes soak).
2. Aquaculture Uses
A. Egg Disinfection (Fish and Shrimp)
– Purpose: Prevent transmission of pathogens (e.g., *Aeromonas*, *Vibrio*, *Saprolegnia*).
– Dosage:
– Fish eggs: 50–100 ppm iodine (0.005%–0.01% PVP-I) for 5–10 minutes.
– Shrimp eggs: Often lower concentration, e.g., 25–50 ppm for 2–3 minutes.
B. Disinfection of Equipment and Water
Usage: Cleaning tanks, nets, containers.
Dosage: 100–200 ppm iodine solution (0.01%–0.02% PVP-I) for soak or spray.
C. Treatment of Fish/Shrimp Skin Ulcers or External Infections
-Topical treatment or bath:
-Topical:* Apply 1% PVP-I to infected area (briefly, then rinse if needed).
-Bath dips:* 10–25 ppm iodine for 5–15 minutes under supervision (ensure oxygenation and temperature control).
> Caution: Iodine is toxic at high levels—dosages must be accurate, and overexposure avoided to prevent stress or mortality in aquatic animals.
Handling Notes
-PVP-I is inactivated by organic matter**, so clean surfaces or rinse organisms before application.
-Store solutions away from light and heat** to preserve iodine stability.
-Residues should be managed carefully to avoid environmental toxicity.
