Description

Professional Waterproof Portable pH/ORP Meter

The HI98190 is a rugged, portable pH meter with the performance and features of a benchtop. This professional, waterproof meter complies with IP67 standards and measures pH, ORP and temperature. The HI98190 is supplied with all necessary accessories to perform a pH/temperature measurement packaged into a durable carrying case.

For the measurement of pH, the HI98190 comes with an HI12963 titanium body amplified pH electrode with a built-in temperature sensor for automatic temperature compensated readings. The titanium probe body is chemically resistant to aggressive chemicals and is virtually unbreakable. The HI12963 pH/temperature electrode features a newly designed Quick Connect DIN connector that provides a simple waterproof connection without any threads.

Hanna’s unique CAL Check™ feature alerts the user to potential problems during the calibration process. By comparing previous calibration data to the current calibration, the meter will alert the user with display prompts when the probe needs to be cleaned or is broken, and if the pH buffer might be contaminated. After calibration, the overall probe condition is displayed as a percentage from 0 to 100% in increments of 10%. The probe condition is affected by both the offset and slope characteristics of the pH electrode and is displayed on the measurement screen on the day of calibration and in the GLP data. Calibration can be performed up to five points with seven preprogrammed standard pH buffers and five custom ones to achieve a pH accuracy of ±0.002 with ±0.001 pH resolution.

Pressing the “AutoHold” virtual key seen in measurement mode, the meter will freeze a stable reading, allowing for the reading to be documented or logged. An “out of calibration range” warning can be enabled that will alert the user when a reading is not within the bracket of calibrated pH values.

The log-on-demand mode allows the user to record and save up to 200 samples (100 for pH and 100 for mV). This data, along with the associated GLP data, can then be transferred to a PC with Hanna’s HI920015 micro USB cable and HI92000 software.

The high contrast graphic LCD is easy to read outdoors in bright sunlight as well as in low-lit areas with the use of the backlight. A combination of dedicated and virtual keys allows easy, intuitive operation in a choice of languages.

The compact, durable carrying case is thermoformed to hold all necessary components for taking a field measurement, including the meter and electrode, beakers, buffer solutions, cleaning solutions, and storage solutions.

Glass Body ORP Electrode

The HI36183 is a glass body, refillable, single junction ORP electrode with a built-in temperature sensor and a quick connect DIN connector. This type of connector is proprietary to specific meters such as the HI98190.

The HI36183 ORP electrode has a single ceramic junction in the outer reference cell and the ORP sensing pin is made of platinum. This design consideration is ideal for laboratories and general purpose oxidation reduction reaction measurements.

Platinum Sensing Pin

Hanna Instruments offers a wide variety of electrodes that are designed for many different applications. The type sensing type, body material, type of junction, type of reference and electrolyte used are just some of the design considerations.

The HI36183 uses a platinum pin, glass body, single ceramic junction and is refillable with 3.5M KCl + AgCl.

Platinum Sensing Pin

The HI36183 ORP sensor is made with platinum. An ORP sensor must be chemically inert; it cannot be oxidized or reduced itself. It must also have the proper surface characteristics to promote rapid electron exchange, a property known as high exchange current density. Two noble metals have proven to work well for this purpose: pure platinum and pure gold are both used in the construction of ORP sensors. The platinum sensor is often preferred because it is mechanically simpler and safer to produce. Platinum can be welded to glass and has a similar thermal coefficient.

Glass Body

The glass body is ideal for laboratory use. The glass is resistant to many harsh chemicals and is easily cleaned. The glass body also allows for a fast transfer of heat to the internal reference electrolyte. The mV generated by the reference cell is temperature dependent. The faster the equilibrium the steadier the reference potential.

Single Ceramic Junction

The outer junction of an electrode, also known as a salt bridge, is necessary component of the electrical circuit. The movement of ions must flow through the junction for a steady reading. The outer reference has a single ceramic frit. The ceramic is a porous material that is easily fused with the glass body and has a similar expansion coefficient. A single ceramic junction has a flow rate of 15-20 μL/hour. Other junction types are available with higher flow rates and made with different materials.

Refillable

The HI36183 is a refillable probe. Since it is a single junction ORP electrode the fill solution is the HI7071 3.5M KCl + AgCl. If using a refillable ORP electrode, the fill cap should be removed prior to measurement. Removing the cap creates positive head pressure in the reference cell allowing for higher flow rate of electrolyte through the outer junction. A higher flow rate will result in a faster and more stable reading.

Quick Connect DIN Connector

The HI36183 uses a Quick Connect DIN connector that makes attaching and removing the probe simple and easy. This type of connector is proprietary to the meter. See specifications table for compatible meters.
