Description

Hydrosense Ultra Legionella Industrial 5 test Kit. Part Code: H100182

The Industrial Test Kit includes a sample collection point that easily installs into a standard plumbing fitting (US ½inch NPT and ¾ inch BPT fittings).

The sample connection supplied allows water samples to be obtained from plumbing connections provided in installations including: industrial cooling towers, large water systems in hotels, residential and commercial properties. It can also be used in showers.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Specificity

The test has been shown to be non-reactive with the following bacteria (at 1108 organisms per sample):

Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Aeromonashydrophila subsp. hydrophila, Bacillus subtilis, Burkholderia cepacia, Citrobacterfreudii, Citrobacterkoseri, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiellaoxytoca, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Ralstoniapickettii, Raoultellaterrigena, Streptococcus pyrogenes, Yersinia ruckeri..

Staphylococcus aureus and Legionella pneumophila serogroups 4 and 7 in samples at concentrations higher than 1108 organisms per sample may produce weak positive results. These concentrations are higher than would be expected to be present in normal water samples.

Legionella pneumophila serogroups 4 & 7 cross react with the test at concentrations >109 CFU/sample. The test does not react with any other L. pneumophila serogroups or L. species tested.

Biocides

A wide range of non-oxidizing biocides and bio dispersants have been checked for cross reaction and interference with the test.

The test should not be used on systems treated with biguanide or tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulfate (THPS) based biocides

This Legionella test kit is ideal where repeated sampling of the same water outlet is required and includes 5 test kits. It uses the unique Hydrosense filter technology, which isolates the bacteria via standard plumbing connections (US ½inch NPT and ¾ inch BPT fittings).

A great choice for territories and industries where more stringent action levels are required.

Recommended for high-risk areas such as industrial cooling towers, large water systems in hotels, healthcare, residential and commercial properties.

The pipe fitting also conveniently connects directly to standard shower hoses
Sensitivity: 100 CFU/L

Other test methods for Legionella

Dipslides test for bacteria, but not Legionella. Specialists and manufacturers suggest monitoring total aerobic count of water systems.

For example, Oxoid manufacturer:

The Use of Dip Slides for Legionella Testing

The Oxoid range of Dip Slides may not be used for the testing of environmental samples for Legionella spp. Legionella testing should always be carried out by laboratories experienced in handling this organism. The isolation and subsequent confirmation of Legionella requires specialist media and techniques which are not compatible with the Dip Slide format.
Dip Slides, such as the TTC (Red Spot) DS0147A, may be used to routinely monitor the total aerobic count of water systems to ensure the system is ‘in control’. Further information may be found in the following code of practice:
Legionnaires’ disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems – Approved Code of Practice & Guidance (2000) Her Majesty’s Stationery Office.

monitor the total aerobic count of water systems

The approach is as follows:
The legionellaceae family of bacteria can be found in aquatic environments / artificial Water systems such as:
• Cooling towers
• Cooling systems
• Hot water tanks
• Fountains
• Piped water systems for hotels and ships
• Spas / hot tubs, swimming pools
• Showers
• Soil / compost
• Anywhere where water is stored or circulated
The testing for Legionella should always be conducted using a Legionella specific test (dipslides do not specfically test for legionella bacteria). Therefore, you cannot use dipslides alone to monitor your water. However, dipslides can be used to assess the ‘general health’ of your water and will indicate if any bacteria is present.
Dipslides will monitor the total aerobic bacteria count in your system. If bacteria is present, we suggest that you conduct further tests to see if Legionella is one of the organisms in the system. Even if legionella is not identified, the presence of other organisms can support legionella by producing the organic nutrients that it needs to thrive.
Contaminants can also corrode and damage equipment / systems such as pipes which can affect the flow of water making it ideal for legionella to grow. This is why it is highly recommended that you test for all bacteria and keep all contaminants under control.
The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) recommend weekly testing with dipslides as well as routine sampling for legionella (at least quarterly). This would need to be done more frequently if the dipslides show results of aerobic bacteria.
If the dipslide aerobic count is 10,000 cfu / ml or less, this is considered under control by the HSE (UK regulations). If between 10,000 and 100,000 cfu / ml, a review will need to be put in place. Re-sampling by dipslide should also be done to re-confirm findings. It is our view, that it would be advisable to also conduct a legionella sampling at this point.
If over 100,000, immediate corrective action is required. When testing for legionella, always adhere to and research local laws, requirements and regulations.

Laboratory options

A PCR lab can be established to monitor Legionella.

Microscopic (fluorescence) methods are another large budget and technical option.
